We offer the following types of performance individually or in combinations:
Contemporary Taiko Ensemble
"eclectic and up-beat"
Combining traditions and rhythms from East and West, the contemporary Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble features the traditional taiko in a world music ensemble with melodic and other percussive instruments (such as vibraphones, koto (Japanese zither), congas, saxophone, flute, viola, bamboo flutes, djembe, etc.). Endo leads ensembles based in Honolulu, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
Traditional and Contemporary Taiko Ensemble Drumming (kumi daiko)
"visually and aurally dynamic and exciting"
An all-taiko drum ensemble (may also include bamboo flute depending on program).
Kenny Endo as a soloist
"a stunning performer, energizing and awe-inspiring"
Trained in western and Japanese music, Endo is considered one of the foremost leaders in utilizing the traditional taiko in innovative collaborations. Endo holds the distinction of becoming the first non-Japanese national to receive a stage name in Japanese classical drumming.
Japanese Lion Dance (Edo Kotobuki Jishi)
"good luck and good fortune"
Featuring a gorgeous gold-headed lioness with white mane, the traditional Japanese lion dance is indispensable for celebrations and auspicious occasions. Performed for good luck and fortune (appropriate for weddings, celebrations, anniversaries, openings, commemorations), it is considered good luck to be "bitten" by the lion. An interactive performance, people offer flat bills of money to entice the lion to "snap" at them!
Taiko Collaborations
"awesome opportunity to create new works"
A taiko performance in collaboration with artists of all genres including dance, video, fireworks, visual artists, symphony, big bands, other types of music, etc.
Taiko Workshop
"an invaluable and inspiring work-out"
A hands-on workshop, participants can learn basic form and rhythmic patterns found in Japanese drumming or advanced technique, improvisation, interlocking rhythms and/or special curriculum. A complete art form incorporating the mind, body, and spirit. Taiko is also great for team-building workshops. Endo holds the distinction of becoming the first non-Japanese national to receive a stage name in Japanese classical drumming and holds a master's degree in music from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Lecture/Demonstration
"educational, cultural, and fun!"
A cultural and educational program introducing the many drums and percussion instruments of Japan in combination with performance.
Residency
"invaluable experience with a master"
Workshops and classes for an extended period. Good as a conference/convention group activity, or for established or newly forming taiko groups. Practice drums and practice tires can be provided for up to 20 active participants (additional equipment available upon request) in certain locales. |
